Standard 5 in the Maine Common Core Teaching Standard focuses on connecting concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in thinking and collaboration as well as using problem solving. I believe this artifact from this course fits under Standard 5. The lesson I created goes over the entire alphabet as well as common letter combinations.
My mini lesson gives my student a break down of each letter sound as well as examples, which could be used if necessary for the student. For my mini lesson, I focused mainly on letter combinations. Knowing the letter sounds and the sounds of letter combinations can help the student in spelling and sounding out words while writing independently. This is also a tool that can be used in the future with all types of students who do not know the sounds of each letter, have trouble in sounding out words, and confusion between letters.
